It's the
beginning of Spring here in Australia, and very warm. I'm writing this weeks issue on my
Gateway notebook, sitting under one of the ancient trees in the ranch's big garden. I love
working this way, running a 60 foot extension phone line from the house, and sitting here
miles from anywhere with the soft wind stirring the long grass, but at the same time
everywhere in the world because of the Internet. Kate's just captured me on the digital

Recently Time magazine ran a
special cover story on people becoming instant
multi-millionaires when their web-based businesses IPO. And sometimes it
seems that you can't pick up a magazine without reading about the dot com fortunes being
made on the Internet.
If you've got a web site of your own it kind
of sets you off dreaming doesn't it? Be a bit like winning a major lottery twice in a row.

Maybe mega-rich is out of sight, but lots of us are running

A couple of days ago Kate was writing a
school essay about Gang Violence. She found all the information, and quotes she needed to
make it zing, on the Internet.
And it got me thinking. How do you use
the Internet to help you in writing ezine and web site articles?
Articles published in online
newsletters, and in ebooks, can bring you a lot of traffic to your web site. But sometimes
it's a struggle to come up with something fresh and new.
One easy way to compile a new topical
piece is to build it around topical news quotes.
As an example, let's say that you want
to do a piece on online customer relations.
Here's a simple way of getting quotes
and gathering the info you need.
Go to http://www.newsindex.com/
which let's you search current articles
in over 300 newspapers. Type in the phrase "online customer relations",
and up will pop a number of links to stories and news reports containing that exact
phrase. Go to each story and grab the quote's you need.
You've got to be careful of copyright of
course, but generally short news quotes are ok to use. After all the person speaking has
probably said it in front of a hundred journalists at a news conference, and been quoted a
hundred times in a hundred newspapers.

I don't want to put the knockers on your
Internet surfing ( called surfing because the surname of the "father"of the net
is Cerf ) but danger lurks everywhere.
And I don't just mean dirty pictures
when you don't want to see them, or an email virus which attacks your hard drive. This
one's far worse because all you have to do is visit certain web sites to put your computer
in danger.
It seems that computers using Microsoft
Internet Explorer 4 or 5 are vulnerable to Java attacks, which include reading, writing,
and deleting files, reformatting your hard drive, or copying data to or from your
computer. Microsoft have issued a "Vulnerability Patch" to protect your machine.

If you have Internet Explorer 4.0 or 5
on your computer you definitely have an affected version of Microsoft VM and should
consider upgrading to the new version. Obviously the danger of attack is not extensive.
You have to visit a site where someone has deliberately set up the Java attack program
before you can be affected.

Here's a tip that I found at the Internet
Marketing Challenge site. It's easy for people to get listings of all the files in the
sub-directories of your web site. If you want to stop them make sure that all your
sub-directories, including the ones where you keep your graphics have an index.htm or html
file in them. If you don't do this a listing of all the files in that directory will be
displayed.

Article: Backing up can
save your business

I'm forever writing in my Australian newspaper
computer columns about the importance of backing up your files.
But I don't always follow what I preach. This
week Eudora crashed when I was accessing my zip drive and I lost two weeks worth of
emails.
It got me thinking: maybe normal backing up
isn't sufficient?
What happens if someone breaks in an steals
your computer and your back up discs?
What happens if your house or office burns
down?
What happens if....
There's a lot of what ifs.
So maybe you should investigate storing some
your critical files online?
The other big advantage, of course, is that you
can access your files when you're logged onto someone else's computer. Instead of carrying
discs back and forth from work to your home office you can save them on the web and access
them from either computer. Working out of a hotel? Log onto the net, grab the file, then
reload it when you've finished.

Freedrive is the one I decided on. It seems to be the quickest to use, gives you 20 Meg of
storage space. And it's simple and secure.
